Hardness standardization stirs waters
Article Abstract:
The business community expressed apprehension over the adoption of new hardness standards, claiming that it will create an adverse impact on their operations. During a conference held by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in Gaithersburg, MD, NIST officials introduced various changes in the Rockwell C Hardness (HRC) in an effort to harmonize the country's standards to international levels. The new standards, which are 0.2 to 0.8 HRC points higher, may require some testers to be recalibrated, if not replaced. Industry members believe these standards would not only extend test cycles, but alter the use of (NIST)traceable blocks and indenters, as well.

The quality pro is key in pursuit of ISO 14000
Article Abstract:
A company's certification process for ISO 14000 may be expedited by a quality manager. The ISO 14000, which provides guidelines that will help companies move toward environmental compliance, has a management system similar to that of the ISO 9000. Despite the concerns of some quality professionals in their unfamiliarity with the environmental aspects of ISO 14000, their professional expertise in management systems is invaluable in unifying the efforts of quality and environmental departments toward the certification.
