Hardware, software, nowhere
Article Abstract:
Process design software can simplify the design of chemical plants from design concept through pilot plant, engineering, construction, startup and operation when used by competent chemical engineers. However, process simulation software cannot replace good engineering judgment nor can it substitute for pilot plants and testing procedures. The simulation software can only augment and make more cost-effective the various engineering phases, such as research and development, process development and pilot plant design.

Prevent pollution via better reactor design and operation
Article Abstract:
There are several ways of improving the design of chemical reactors that will help prevent pollution. For instance, it is preferrable to use regulatory-unlisted solvents over regulatory-listed ones. Heptane should be selected over hexane since the latter substance is an organic hazardous air pollutant under the Clean Air Amendment Act. Another method is through the improvement of the way reactants are added. These can be realized by enhancing the design of the dip-tube or the sparger.

Significant short-term growth predicted
Article Abstract:
The chemical industry will experience significant growth in electronic commerce in 2002, according to a global study done by KPMG International. Chemical companies do business almost exclusively with other companies, and shifting these transactions online will save time and money, notes John Chapman, global chairman for chemicals and pharmaceuticals at KPMG. Industry executives surveyed predict online revenues will rise by 1% to 15% by Mar 2002.
