IEEE's Posix: making progress
Article Abstract:
There are 19 IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) working groups pursuing 26 projects developing the portable operating system interface (POSIX) standards to achieve industry-wide portability and interoperability of UNIX operating system-based applications and computer systems. These projects are overseen by the Working Group 1003.0 of the IEEE Technical Committee on Operating Systems. Individual standards under 1003.0 are in various stages of completion, with 1003.1 (system application program interface) being the only complete one, and 1003.2 (shell and utilities) and 1003.2a (user portability extension), 1003.4 (real-time extensions) and 1003.4a (threads extension), 1003.5 (Ada language binding), 1003.6 (security extensions) and 1003.9 (Fortran interface) nearing completion. Details of the functions and goals of POSIX standards and the roles of application programming interfaces in developing portable software are discussed.

Awards 92
Article Abstract:
The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) announces its 1992 awardees for excellence in research, service, engineering leadership and corporate innovation. The WRG Baker Prize Award goes to Alan Orlitsky while Bertrand S. Clarke and Andrew R. Barron share the Browder J. Thompson Memorial Prize Award. All three won on the strength of their published works on information theory. The Donald G. Fink Award is won by Anthony Ephremides and Sergio Verdu who co-authored a paper on communication networks and automatic control. The Haraden Pratt Award and Richard M Emberson Award for active service to the IEEE went to Richard James Backe and Bruno O. Weinschel, respectively. Meanwhile, Ericsson Radio AB and Philips Electronics NV received the IEEE Corporate Innovation Recognitions for their contribution to radio technology development.
