Motors use the sun and go down well
Article Abstract:
Engineers are increasingly developing the efficiency of electric motors which have the capacity to work in both hot and cold climates, wet and dry conditions and at increasingly lower depths. A brushless motor has been developed by UK-based motor manufacturer Nelco. The motor is small and light, although can provide up to 150 kilowatts of power. Australian-based CSIRO has produced an electric motor which can work under water while being powered by the sun.

Flux switches way to low cost speed control
Article Abstract:
The Centre for Advanced Electronically Controlled Drives (CAECD), Leicester, England, is developing a new type of reluctance motor suitable for low-cost speed control. The motors have no brushes and can be used in place of DC motors in applications around the home and office. Among the members of the CAECD are leading names such as Black and Decker, LucasVarity and Kenwood.

Direct coupled turbines power the future
Article Abstract:
Nelco Systems of Watford, England, has developed a family of high-speed generators and motors. The brushless generators and motors can reach speeds of up to 90,000 rpm and produce power of up to 250 kW. Their rotor parts are contained by aramid or wound carbon fibre. Nelco's new 250 kW generator is coupled to a gas turbine impeller.
