New solutions to urban issues: John Gummer's 'Urban Design Campaign' is the first recognition of the importance of a serious concept
Article Abstract:
Environment secretary John Gummer recently launched his 'Urban Design Campaign' with funds over more than 300,000 pounds sterling distributed to 21 individual urban design projects throughout the country. The winning schemes shows that the private sector is way ahead of the public sector in urban design expertise. Huddersfield has established itself as a top centre for arts in the north of England, and its Lawrence Batley Theatre attracts large audiences. In Birmingham the council has secured new uses for declining industrial areas and Poole has put in place plans for a new public square in front of the arts centre and traffic calming measures.

The triumphant tale of two cities
Article Abstract:
The decision by the Sports Council to approve a National Stadium for Wembley, London, England, and a smaller stadium for Manchester, England, will form the basis for two extensive urban regeneration schemes. Wembley Stadium will be upgraded with investment of 120 million pounds sterling, while the Manchester scheme will receive 60 million pounds sterling. It is hoped that the Wembley development will prove the driving force for new development in the borough, while the Manchester scheme will create 2,500 jobs.
