Off-the-shelf training: trash or treasure?

Article Abstract:

Off-the-shelf training has its own advantages and disadvantages. It comes in the form of simple manuals, overhead-projector transparencies, audio and video tapes, and multimedia computer programs. Readiness, low price, and structural consistency are among its proven advantages. On the other hand, specificity, consistency, and quality of delivery are among its common limitations. Most firms subscribing to this kind of training express frustration when expected results are not achieved. Modifying and customizing off-the-shelf training will make it more effective.
