Parting shots
Article Abstract:
Donald Christiansen, IEEE Spectrum Editor and Publisher, bids his staff and readers farewell after 21 years of service with the magazine. Christiansen praises the past and current efforts of Spectrum's editorial boards, reviewers, professional advertising and marketing staffs, and the staff as a whole. Christiansen believes future engineers should become more knowledgeable and active in the management of their own organization to protect the organization from short-lived and ill-advised management fads and stockholder decisions. Future IEEE leaders must have confidence in the good judgment and common sense of its members and the profession. Furthermore, the global nature of the IEEE requires that its leaders skillfully balance and serve the needs of its members with good will, good humor and a sense of perspective.

An electronic nation
Article Abstract:
Singapore's economy depends strongly on electronics, computers, and automation, and its government plays a strong role in economic development. After achieving full employment in manufacturing, Singapore set and met goals to lure capital-intensive industries and higher-skilled jobs. Its new goal is to promote research and development. Through its schools, Singapore develops manpower for assembly, technical, and manufacturing engineering, and it promotes computer literacy, automation, and positive work attitudes. In partnership with Japan, West Germany, and France, Singapore has three institutes of technology. Several US manufacturers have training centers for IC design, industrial robotics, and CAD-CAM-CAE. The work of Singapore's Economic Development Board and National Productivity Council is discussed.

It's the law, but is it ethical?
Article Abstract:
Corporate lawyers have changed the nature of patent law and liability law to benefit business interests with complete neglect for ethics and the progression of science and law. Eminent radio and electronics professionals were advised by legal counsel to lie and express extreme reactions to suppress competition from other inventors and technology pioneers. Large companies instill in their employees a sense of respect for the abstract success of the corporation over all others. In patent cases, excellent advances are restricted and subverted by greedy businesses that cannot exist with the potential of better technologies. These companies solicit the expert testimony of scientists who hold extreme views that are in line with the best interests of the company.
