Starting a research program at a PUI
Article Abstract:
Starting a research program at a primarily undergraduate institution (PUI), the primary mission of which is in general to teach, is discussed with the observation that time is more precious than money in this setting. Experiences at the University of Redlands (Redlands, CA) are related by an assistant professor of chemistry whose research is in facilitated transport in liquid membranes in which the facilitating molecule is photoactive.

Training future chemical biologists
Article Abstract:
Training chemical biologists of the future, with the horizons opening for chemical research in the postgenomic era boundless, is discussed. A chemical biologist does research that applies chemical techniques and leads to insight into living organisms. Many different methods offer uniquely powerful tools for figuring out molecular mechanisms in biology. The chemical biology program at the University of California, Irvine, is reviewed.
