Tom breaks his promise

Article Abstract:

A hypothetical human resources problem involving the vice president of research of a corporation is presented. The vice president has been informed by the company's CEO that the small commercial project run by the R&D division has been sold. The dilemma faced by the vice president is how to handle the low morale among the R&D employees who were affected by the deal. What makes the problem worse is that the vice president had earlier promised to the employees that they would eventually be assigned to more conventional positions.
