Using the IRI/CIMS R&D Database
Article Abstract:
Data from the IRI/CIMS R&D Database show that there is a measurable trend toward decentralization of R&D. This is evident in the database's Management Practices Survey, which indicates a shift in the commitment of resources from corporate laboratories to business segment laboratories. Another development that provides evidence of a trend toward R&D decentralization is the increase in influence of business segment management on R&D efforts. Furthermore, R&D program funding and activities are being reallocated from basic, longer-term, high-risk research to product and process development.

Using the IRI/CIMS R&D database
Article Abstract:
The R&D Database co-developed by the Industrial Research Institute and the Center for Innovation Management Studies is a very useful tool for researchers. It offers information about R&D resources, activities and management practices employed by research professionals and the greater business community. In addition to describing trends, the database also offers answers to various problems in benchmarking industrial R&D. The new sales ratio metric as described by the database is discussed.

Meet your competition: results from the 1994 IRI/CIMS annual R&D survey
Article Abstract:
The results of the 1994 Industrial Research Institute/Center for Innovation Management Studies survey reveal that R&D managers consider financial return as the most important factor in measuring the performance of their research projects. Financial return is measured based on new sales ratio, cost savings ratio, R&D yield, and R&D return. The survey provides information that enable managers to monitor their research spending and performance.
