A new approach to monitoring the social environment for natural resource management and policy: The case of US national forest benefits and values
Article Abstract:
Natural resource managers have an increasingly complex job due to rapid changes in the social, political, economic and scientific environments where management is undertaken. A new approach for monitoring the social context for natural resource management is described, developed from a social monitoring system based on computer content analysis of online news media stories about he USDA Forest Service and national forests. The method does not replace traditional social science tools, but the new approach can establish time trends, be updated easily and expanded to include further issues.

Using linear programming to optimize rehabilitation and restoration of injured land: an application to US army training sites
Article Abstract:
Traditional cost minimization theory using linear programming is applied to address the problems involved with the rehabilitation of damaged lands. The issues include optimum rehabilitation, optimum damage and optimum budget. The technique was tested on the Fort Carson military reservation, CO. This site is a US military installation that was severely damaged because of military training activities. Results of the study are discussed.

Harvest scheduling with spatial wildlife constraints: an empirical examination of tradeoffs
Article Abstract:
Linear programming (LP) models have become essential tools in determining optimal management strategies for timber forest harvesting. Several LP models that are constrained by spatial wildlife limitations were evaluated to determine their efficacy in predicting optimal harvesting strategies. The alternative models were more accurate than standard LP models.
