Sand and gravel aggregate resource management and conservation in Northern Ireland
Article Abstract:
A study aimed to identify the spatial distribution of glaciofluvial sand and gravel in Northern Ireland, and quantify sand and gravel aggregate reserves based on assumptions of sediment thickness and characteristics. It is concluded that surficial glaciofluvial sand and gravel is an important aggregate resource in Northern Ireland, and reserves range between an estimated 2400 and 14,675 million tonnes. High spatial variability in resource provision, volume and characteristics were found in case studies of the Glarryford esker complex and Lough Fea deltas complex.

On some aspects of the decision to conserve or harvest old growth forest
Article Abstract:
A Markov decision theoretic approach can be valuable when addressing the problem of whether to conserve or harvest old growth forests. This approach explicitly takes into account the fact that the management challenge is intrinsically stochastic. It has been possible to develop models of the old growth forest management challenge on the basis of a Markov decision theoretic framework. However, further research needs to be undertaken, addressing issues including the impact of using old growth forest management policies of a non-Markovian nature.

Habitat conversion, information acquisition, and the conservation of biodiversity
Article Abstract:
A new study analyzes the two main concerns of biodiversity conservation: when should social planners halt the process of habitat conversion and what is the link between planners' optimal conservation policy and their planning horizons?
