Biotechnology and environmental pollution: scientific and ethical reflections
Article Abstract:
There are fears that the use of genetically engineered microorganisms (GEMs) can both be beneficial and hazardous to ecosystems. GEMs can be hazardous because of their potentially harmful effects on human health, animals and the environment. However, some GEMs are also intended to bring about cleaner water and air. A true environmental ethic should be formed in order to prevent the uncertain and deleterious effects of novel technologies such as GEMs. The ethical examination of new technologies should be implemented to prevent future disasters.

Environmental ethics and the Earth Charter
Article Abstract:
The failed attempts to establish an international policy for the environment or Earth Charter during the Earth Summit held in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, have led to the Earth Charter Consultation. A significant point for the Earth Charter will be reached in Mar. 1997 when contributions from all over the world will be evaluated at the Rio + 5 Assembly in Rio de Janeiro. Those who want to participate in this event can browse through information on the World Wide Web. The Earth Council expects the document to be approved by the year 2000.

Assessing community-based natural-resource management
Article Abstract:
There is much debate concerning advocacy for nature and advocacy for people. A movement by nongovernmental organizations to work with locals and national and transnational organizations has began based on community-based natural-resource management (CBNRM). CBNRM is based on the premise that local populations are more interested in sustainable use of resources than the state or distant corporations.
