Environmentally sustainable urbanization and transportation in China - the case for territorial development planning
Article Abstract:
China's urban population estimated at 393 mil in 1997 is the world's largest. However, its urbanization rate remains at a rate of 32%. Such a low rate is a direct consequence of previous urban policies that maximized resources for industrial investment and held down urban infrastructure investment. Furthermore, China's road system and rail network are inadequate, but investment is being made to improve transportation.
