Fishing and farming at Lake Chad: overcapitalisation, opportunities, and fisheries management
Article Abstract:
The close link between household farming and fishing activities at Lake Chad indicates that the integration of both makes it necessary to consider the inter-sectoral effects of potential fisheries management strategies. Limiting capital investment in certain fisheries in the basin has largely solved the problem of overcapitalization and increased the returns on capital invested in fishing. The survey also demonstrates that households which do not devote resources to fishing and rely exclusively on farming are less productive than households which combine farming with fishing activities.
