From interesting details to dynamical relevance: toward more effective use of empirical insights in theory construction
Article Abstract:
The author evaluates individual-based, stochastic and spatially explicit computational models (IBMs) for representing the range of complexity and contingency in real-world systems. He concludes that IBMs are an important intermediate step within the theory development process, as they reduce a wide variety of details into dynamically relevant components.

The method of synthesis in ecology
Article Abstract:
A method is presented for constructing a causal scientific explanation for describing ecological processes. This method includes definitions of consistent causal processes that depict system functions, provides general data about events of similar kinds under similar conditions, and enables experiments to produce a predictable response.

On the conceptual basis of the self-thinning rule
Article Abstract:
A model is presented to describe the self-thinning rule as applied to vegetation dynamics, which incorporates maximum plant mass diversity. The model is based on given stochastic variables and probability densities.
