Recent studies improve understanding of population dynamics across species ranges
Article Abstract:
Significant ecological and evolutionary concerns are the basis of speculation including the responses of species ranges to climate change, where to situate habitat reserves and patterns of gene flow between populations. The fact that edges take up considerably more area in terrestrial ranges than central areas, results in total population size that is greatest somewhere between the center and the margin of the range, even when densities follow the abundant center pattern.

The influence of genetic factors and population dynamics on the mating system of the hermaphroditic freshwater snail Biomphalaria pfeifferi
Article Abstract:
A survey of mating system of the population of the freshwater snail Biomphalaria pfeifferi, the major intermediate host of Schistosoma mansoni in Africa, in two areas of Madagascar was conducted in 1999 and 2000. The results confirmed that B. pfeifferi is a predominant selfer, with selfing rates ranging between 80 and 100%, thus highlighting the influence of environmental heterogeneity and stochasticity on mating system.

Population dynamics of a host-specific root-feeding cyst nematode and resource quantity in the root zone of a clonal grass
Article Abstract:
The population dynamics of Heterodera arenaria in the field are examined in relation to resource quantity in the root zone of Ammophila arenaria, marram grass. It is concluded that in new root layers of Ammophila arenaria, cyst nematodes are bottom-up controlled by resource quantity, but that other factors, like resource quality, influence the relation between nematode abundance and resource quantity.
