The article examines two significant achievements by Greenpeace in fostering protection of the Amazon forest region. Activists teamed with the Deni, society of indigenous people, to prevent logging companies from encroaching on its lands, and worked with the Brazilian government to shut down illegal mahogany harvesting.

Jungle fever: one man's journey through the Amazon
Article Abstract:
A personal narrative is presented on continuing deforestation in Brazil's Amazon region. Attendant problems include child labor, wildlife species killed by timber industry vehicles, waste created by sawmills, a decline in biodiversity, and the loss of cultural practices and lifestyles held by local residents.

Greenpeace is using a variety of tactics to halt illegal logging in the Amazon forest. These include controlling market entry through certification requirements, promotion of sustainable forestry management techniques, and consumer education regarding renewable wood-product alternatives.
