The cost-effectiveness of remote sensing for tropical coastal resources assessment and management
Article Abstract:
Coastal habitat maps are seen as important for coastal management planning, but there is a lack of consensus on the cost-effectiveness of remote sensing methods used in the creation of such maps. It is difficult to reconcile the issue of cost-effectiveness as there is a lack of cost analysis literature. A case study from the Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI, British West Indies), was used to review the relative cost-effectiveness of remote sensing methods, including Landsat Multispectral Scanner (MSS), Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM), SPOT Panchromatic (Pan) and SPOT multispectral (XS) and airborne methods. SPOT XS and Landsat TM were the most cost-effective methods, although airborne methods provide more detailed information.

Sustainable management of the Gran Chaco of South America: Ecological promise and economic constraints
Article Abstract:
An alternative management system for the rapidly degrading area of Gran Chaco in South America is evaluated. The Salta Management System can protect and enhance the resource base, but requires an initial investment that may be uneconomical. However it is suggested that under the present economic situation the poor rural people in the Chaco could not preserve the Chaco forest, even if they are willing to.
