Mixed reception
Article Abstract:
Vietnam is in danger of tainting its reputation as one of the world's 'investment hot spots' despite its favorable economic performance. The country has been attracting foreign investors since opening its markets to the international community in the mid-1980s primarily because of its vastly improved economic fundamentals. The government has successfully reduced inflation from over 300% in the late 1980s to just 12.7% in 1995, and has managed to sustain the 8.5% growth rate of the GDP since the early 1990s. However, there is growing disenchantment among foreign investors who have discovered that corruption is the rule in Vietnam. Many are also frustrated with the country's excessive bureaucracy, inconstant legal structure and high costs, as well as the population's distrust of foreign investment.
