Scholarships: need or merit?
Article Abstract:
Congressional legislation passed in Oct 1994, which allows colleges to give only need-based scholarships instead of merit-based scholarships to students, represents a blow to the interests of talented students. Ivy League colleges and other universities are free to conspire against the needs of good students from poor families by unilaterally limiting financial aid. The legislation does not make it mandatory for the colleges to cater to the full needs of all deserving students.

Uncle Tom or saint? The venerable Pierre Toussaint
Article Abstract:
Haitian Pierre Toussaint, who died in 1853 at the age of 87 was declared Venerable in Dec. 1996. His philanthropical works helped him earn this title but he remains a controversial figure for the 2.4 million black US Catholics and the over 300,000 Haitians in the US. Toussaint is the first lay person to be entombed beside New York's deceased archbishops in a crypt beneath the high altar of St. Patrick's Cathedral on Fifth Ave.
