Americans are buying wines at auctions in large numbers and are driving up prices, while the English are buying very little. Sales statistics on red Bordeaux, vintage Port, Italian wines and California Cabernet Sauvignons are given.

Wines of late tycoon are a sellout

The wine collection of deceased publisher Maxwell sold at high prices at a recent Christie's auction. Maxwell's 3,000-bottle collection was comprised mostly of red Bordeaux. Prices at which the wines sold are given.

Participants in a 1998 charity auction paid premium prices for such wines as a 1973 Chateau Mouton-Rothschild. Proceeds from the auction, which included a gala dinner and wine tasting, came to $735,371.
