Article Abstract:
In 1997, some 450 French wine makers added sugar and tartaric acid to wines. This was done in defiance of European wine making law. Now the French government has allowed the practice for the 1998 and future vintages. While there are no health risks from the additives the practice makes the wine certain to become mediocre.

Caught in a time trap: law puts Italian vintner in Catch-22
Article Abstract:
Italian law regarding appellations in the Torgiano region of the Umbria province was designed to allow only the finest reserves to be granted the DOCG label, but the fine print allows only wines made in 1987 or later to qualify. Torgiano Rosso wines have been aging for 10 years and is appealing the provision.

Michele Chiarlo's wines feature award-winning labels designed by Giancarlo Ferraris. The label for Barolo Cerequio featured a bell tower while two silver moons decorated the label of Plenilunio, a name that means 'full moon.'
