Definition and prevalence of anemia in Bolivian women of childbearing age living at high altitudes: the effect of iron-folate supplementation
Article Abstract:
The cut-off values for diagnosis of anemia by hemoglobin concentrations in people living at high altitudes should be revised upward as many who are actually anemic are not being recognized as such. People living at high altitudes have higher concentrations of hemoglobin and hematocrit than people who live nearer to sea level. However, the standard linear increase per 1000 meters is incorrect and the increase is exponential. The presence of anemia at high altitudes was shown by the rate of hemoglobin response to iron-folate supplements.

Nutrition and depression: the role of folate
Article Abstract:
Folate has been associated with depression. The relationship is supported by clinical observation and knowledge of metabolic pathways in the brain. Of adults with depressive disorders, 15-38% have low or deficient folate levels in the blood, measured by serum or red blood cell concentrations. Low levels of folate have also been associated with poor response to antidepressant treatment with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. Folate or methylfolate supplementation may thus contribute to the effective treatment of depression.

Folate, vitamin B(sub 12), and neuropsychiatric disorders
Article Abstract:
New means of testing for folate and vitamin B(sub 12) deficiencies have shown that these vitamins are linked to a defect in methylation processes, which can result in neuropsychiatric disorders. Twenty-one studies of psychiatric patients with depression, mania, schizophrenia, dementia, and personality disorders, done between 1967 and 1990, showed a high incident of folate deficiency. No study has yet determined what type of methylation defect is involved or how folate and vitamin B(sub 12) deficiencies are tied to the defect.
