Effect of calcium supplementation is greater in prepubertal girls with low calcium intake
Article Abstract:
Girls before puberty who take less than 900 mg/day of calcium had greater increases in bone mineral density than other girls when given more calcium. This shows that the recommended Adequate Intake (AI) of 1300 mg/day of calcium for children of Canada and the US is a desirable amount. The subjects in the study received foods such as cakes, fruit juices, chocolate bars and yogurt, all enriched with calcium, but not the supplements or dairy products with protein used in other studies. More studies on long-term effects and on osteoporosis are needed.

Adverse effects of high-calcium diets in humans
Article Abstract:
High calcium diets exceeding 2,000 mg in daily calcium intake may cause health complications for some people. Toxic effects such as the milk-alkali syndrome can result from excessive calcium. Bioavailability of minerals such as zinc, magnesium, and phosphorus also appears to be negatively affected by high calcium intakes. Likewise, kidney stones may also be associated with high calcium diets. However, calcium does appear to be helpful in preventing osteoporosis and other age-related bone diseases, based on the recommended intake of 1,500 mg/day.
