Results of surveys to assess iron status in Europe
Article Abstract:
Differences in culture and eating habits are responsible for the differences in iron status in people. A study designed to assess the iron status in Europe revealed a high prevalence of iron deficiency in Sweden, Finland and other Northern Scandinavian countries and a high prevalence of iron overload in Central Europe and Denmark. An analysis of the food patterns of these countries showed that countries with a high intake of meat, milk and milk products have a tendency to have an iron overload, while countries with a low intake of meat, vegetables and dietary calcium tend to suffer from iron deficiency.
