Weetabix reported a rise in trading profit to 34.8 million pounds sterling from 30.4 million pounds for the 53 weeks to Aug 1996 compared with 30.4 million pounds for the previous year. Operating margins have increased slightly to 12.8%, despite difficult conditions in the US where price competition has been intense. The company's managing director and chairman has 8,598 voting shares which allow him to raise his salary and grant him absolute power. Despite the company's lack of democracy, it is performing well.

Aussie algae for sunscreen

Algae growing within coral on Australia's Great Barrier Reef has been found to contain an amino acid that absorbs ultraviolet radiation. Laboratory results of a synthetic version of the amino acid shows that it successfully stops UVB rays.
