Obituary
Article Abstract:
Tenacity and strength of character are the traits that distinguish Mahbub ul Haq, a native of Pakistan who served as chief economist in the Pakistan Planning Commission and in the World Bank. After these fruitful stints, he joined the cabinet of Pres Zia ul Haq, first as Minister of Planning and later as Finance Minister and Minister of Commerce. As special advisor to the administrator in the UNDP, he emphasized to his team of consultants as they were preparing the 'Human Development Reports' that the most important requirement of the task is moral courage to stand up for what one believes is right. He returned to Pakistan in 1995 to set up the Human Development Centre for South Asia with his wife, Khadija Haq.
