Surprise in South Australia: how to turn a record majority into a hung parliament
Article Abstract:
Results of the 1997 election in South Australia came as a surprise to both parties when the majority liberal party gave up a 25-seat majority in the Assembly, holding on to only 23 seats, and only carried 40.4% of the primary votes, a swing of 12.5% But Labor should temper their celebrations. The only unequivocal winners were the Australian Democrats who doubled their primary vote in the Assembly, garnering six seats, and increased representation in the Legislative Council to three.

Australia's stolen children
Article Abstract:
Australia's Commissioner for Human Rights, Chris Sidoti, has recommended changes to governmental policies of separation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from their families. Sidoti argues that these children feel tremendous loss and grief by these governmental policies that forcefully keep them away from their families, and put them in unfamiliar living environments.
