At the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Human Nutrition Research Center, women were given 1,300 milligrams of calcium daily for two months. The high-calcium diet was found to relieve symptoms of premenstrual syndrome, including water retention, cramps and mood swings.

Research has shown that consuming one or two drinks a day raises blood levels of 'good' cholesterol in the blood. Moderate drinking decreases risk of heart disease and reduces total mortality by 10 to 15%.
