Leapfroggers
Article Abstract:
More California parents are sending their teenage children right straight to community college, bypassing junior high and high schools. The state's public education system is to be blamed for this problem, say parents and students alike, because its curriculum is out of touch with the times. Teenagers complain of the lack of challenge and the unstimulating social environment offered by public schools. However, the trend has alarmed some educators, who fear that slots that should have gone to disadvantaged adults are being taken up by younger people.

Teacher shortage
Article Abstract:
California has implemented a new teacher recruitment and training policy to keep up with the demands of a burgeoning student population and smaller classes. In addition, the move is aimed at producing more qualified teachers to replace retiring teachers and to fill the vacancies created by the reduction of class size. Thus, the number of emergency permits that have been issued to new teachers have already totaled 21,000, a number which former state Sen Gary Hart finds alarming.
