Article Abstract:
John Burton and Antonio Villaraigosa were both chosen to lead the California State Senate and the Assembly, respectively. Aside from their liberal politics, the two come from strikingly diverse backgrounds. Burton is a veteran politician hailing from the city of San Francisco while Villaraigosa, a Latino, represents an ethnic minority. Although Villaraigosa faces a stiffer challenge, he is confident that the Democratic Party will regain control over the legislature which they lost in 1996.

Sacramento's Phil Isenberg: Mr. Pragmatism hits his stride
Article Abstract:
Assemblyman Phil Isenberg has become an influential voice in California budget legislation. A Democrat from Sacramento, he specializes in pragmatism and compromise. He was the only regular member of the legislature included in this year's 'Big Five' state budget negotiations, reflecting his success last year at framing an alternate plan that pushed Gov Peter Wilson and Speaker of the House Willie Brown into ending their media war. He led the way to relieve counties of state mandates.
