Building better patient care services: a collaborative approach
Article Abstract:
A collaborative approach to hospital management is presented as a way to build better patient care. Among outcomes expected from this practice are elimination of redundancies, improvement of working relations, reduction of hospital administration cost and better patient service. The factors that encourage or detract the use of this approach have been identified at individual, group and organization levels. Conceptual differences about the collaborative approach among the various hospital professionals are expected to discourage its use.

Operating in turbulent times: how Ontario's hospitals are meeting the current funding crisis
Article Abstract:
Several Ontario hospitals were studied from June 1996 to Jan 1997 to determine how they were coping with reduced funding. Results show that hospitals were dealing with the existing healthcare environment by implementing CQI programs, emphasizing customer service, strategic planning and communicating plans to stakeholders. Hospitals have also reengineered their operations by shifting from a departmental to program-based structure.

A multifactorial approach to understanding anesthesia selection
Article Abstract:
Hospitals and health maintenance organizations minimize costs by selecting pharmaceuticals on the basis of price alone. However, pharmaceuticals should also be evaluated for their clinical benefits, which could eventually lead to reduced costs. A full hospital cost accounting model that uses time-allocation methodology to track the total costs of surgery and anesthesia for inpatients is presented.
