My town, my hospital
Article Abstract:
Ottumwa Regional Health Center in Ottumwa, Iowa, was recently listed among 22 other hospitals at risk because of proposed Medicare and Medicaid spending cuts in the 1996 federal budget. However, the hospital has a bed count of 94, has reduced hospital stays, and ended 1994 with $2.5 mil in profits. CEO Clarence Cory plans to help the hospital balance new services bringing higher payments, efficiencies to cut costs and improve care, and building relationships with business partners.

Deals that went down the drain
Article Abstract:
The spate of mergers within the healthcare industry is yielding both good and bad results. Mergers that have fallen apart often involve clearly discernable factors that can be avoided or mitigated if anticipated. Almost 700 agreements to sell of merge were made within the healthcare industry during the first half of 1996, of which over 150 involved hospitals. Several specific cases are discussed.
