St. Mary's Hospital of Rochester, NY was awarded the 1996 Foster G. McGaw prize, a $75,000 award sponsored by the American Hospital Association and the Baxter Foundation. The award recognizes the value of St. Mary's' primary care clinics and community health programs to a city that was ranked as the 13th poorest in the nation. The hospital has been particularly adept at adapting its primary care and community programs to the particular needs of the communities it serves.

A kinder, gentler ER

Bergan Mercy Medical Center in Omaha, NE, has instituted small changes designed to make its emergency room friendlier to patients and their loved ones. The hospital is the first to adopt the Planetree organization's patient-centered care model. The changes include keeping wheelchairs and other medical paraphernalia out of sight, substituting bright overhead lights for wall fixtures and stocking children's exam rooms with TVs and cartoons.

Normal, IL-based Bromenn Healthcare found that their reengineering program had to be customized. The wanted to reduce expenses by 15%, improve healthcare quality and decrease discharge fees by $450. Bromenn introduced design teams and tried to implement the changes without an expensive consulting team. Bromenn executives also found that some companies did not prepare their employees for changes.
