A 22-year-old man with 20 months of progressive swelling of the face
Article Abstract:
A 22-year-old man was diagnosed with lymphoma after admission to the hospital for advancing swelling of his face. He had developed swelling on the inner side of his right upper lip 20 months before being admitted to the hospital. Another swelling had developed on the inside of his right lower jaw. Three different biopsies had been done of the lesions before admission to the hospital, but no diagnosis had been made. Only slight shrinkage of the lesions had occurred after treatment with prednisone. Treatment with acyclovir and ketoconazole over a one-week period had been unsuccessful. A biopsy of his chin revealed localized lymphoma of the skin and the subcutaneous tissue of the face. The patient was treated with two different types of combination chemotherapy. The lesions disappeared four months after starting the second type of chemotherapy.

A 39-year-old man with bilateral renal masses a few months after treatment for Hodgkin's disease, stage IIA
Article Abstract:
A 39-year-old man was admitted to Massachusetts General Hospital several months after receiving radiation treatment for Hodgkin's disease. He had fever, sweats and weight loss. A computed tomography (CT) scan of his abdomen revealed several masses on both kidneys. A kidney biopsy showed that he had non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Patients who are treated for Hodgkin's disease have a higher risk of subsequent cancer. This may be a side effect of radiation or chemotherapy, but could also be a result of the impaired immune system characteristic of Hodgkin's disease. This is probably the case in this patient, because his symptoms arose just a few months after treatment. He was treated with chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant.

A seven-year-old boy with fever, lymphadenopathy, hepatosplenomegaly, and prominent eosinophilia
Article Abstract:
A 7-year-old boy was admitted to a hospital with fever, enlarged lymph glands and an enlarged liver and spleen. Two months before admission, he had a seizure and began taking the anticonvulsant drug carbamazepine. Three days before admission he developed a rash and stopped taking the drug. Upon admission, the level of white blood cells called eosinophils was elevated. A bone marrow biopsy ruled out leukemia, which can also cause an elevated eosinophil count. He was diagnosed with a hypersensitivity reaction to carbamazepine.
