A 57-year-old man with chronic lymphedema and enlarging purple cutaneous nodules of the leg
Article Abstract:
A 57-year-old man was admitted to Massachusetts General Hospital with extensive purple lesions on the skin of his right leg, which was also swollen. At the age of 38, he had had a mass surgically removed from his right inguinal region. He subsequently experienced repeated episodes of swelling of his right leg and was admitted to hospitals several times over the next 18 years. However, peripheral angiograms of his leg revealed no evidence of blood clots or other material blocking his blood vessels. At 57, he developed large purple lesions on the leg. Angiosarcoma, a tumor of blood vessels, was considered the most likely diagnosis. A skin biopsy confirmed the diagnosis. There have been more than 220 cases of angiosarcoma developing in individuals with chronic edema. This man's leg was amputated, and examination of the tissue revealed extensive hemorrhagic nodules and tumor nodules.
