A parent's eye-view of paediatric day case surgery
Article Abstract:
A mother tells of her experiences of her three-year-old son being treated as a day patient for an undescended testis. She found the atmosphere at the hospital friendly and informal, with pre- and post-operative care being of a very high standard. There was a family-centred approach, with parents being encouraged to assist. It is worth being aware that with any day surgery, especially on children, there is a possibility that an overnight stay may be necessary if there are any complications.

The toy trap uncovered. (toys and cross infection in the paediatric ward)
Article Abstract:
Paediatric wards often encourage children to play with toys, but toys can be a potential source of cross-infection. A project at Solihull Hospital aimed to investigate the subject by considering the types of toys available, storage methods and cleaning methods. It found that although only environmental organisms were found on the toys, they could pose a risk to immunocompromised children.
