Pharmacologic treatment of cancer pain
Article Abstract:
Many cancer patients do not receive adequate pain medication. The Three-Step Analgesic Ladder developed by the World Health Organization starts with aspirin, acetaminophen or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents for patients in mild to moderate pain. If patients do not respond to these drugs, the dose should be increased and opioid drugs such as codeine, hydrocodone or oxycodone should be added. Patients in moderate to severe pain who do not respond to these drugs should have their dose increased or be switched to morphine, hydromorphone or fentanyl. Most drugs should be given orally.

High-dose pancreatic-enzyme supplements and fibrosing colonopathy in children with cystic fibrosis
Article Abstract:
High-dose pancreatic enzyme supplements may increase the risk of fibrosis in the large intestine in cystic fibrosis patients. Researchers studied 29 cystic fibrosis patients who were diagnosed with this condition, which is called fibrosing colonopathy. Patients who were taking 24,001 to 50,000 units of the supplement per kilogram of body weight per day had 10 times the risk of fibrosing colonopathy than those taking lower doses. Those taking more than 50,000 units had 200 times the risk. Patients probably should not exceed a dosage of 10,000 units per kilogram per day.

Pharmacologic approaches to correcting the basic defect in cystic fibrosis
Article Abstract:
Researchers continue to identify potential treatments for cystic fibrosis. Cystic fibrosis is caused by a gene mutation that creates an abnormal cell membrane protein. However, gene therapy is not likely to work, so researchers are focusing on changing the abnormal protein. A study published in 2003 showed that a group of antibiotics called aminoglycosides may be effective.
