Clinical and neuroradiographic manifestations of Eastern equine encephalitis
Article Abstract:
An MRI scan of the brain may be the best way to diagnose eastern equine encephalitis quickly. This viral infection infects the brain and can be fatal. Researchers reviewed the cases of 36 people diagnosed with this infection in the US between 1988 and 1994. Thirty-two had had a CT scan and 14 had had an MRI scan. The MRI scan detected 71% of the patients who had brain lesions in the basal ganglia and thalamus. CT scans were less effective in detecting these lesions. The involvement of the basal ganglia and thalamus may differentiate this infection from other types of brain infections.

Control of Japanese encephalitis -- within our grasp?
Article Abstract:
The causes, symptoms, diagnosis and treatment of Japanese encephalitis are discussed in the light of the outbreak of the disease in India and Nepal in 2005. Vaccines are developed to prevent Japanese encephalitis, but it is unlikely to be totally eradicated because of the complex ecology of the virus involving multiple vertebrate hosts and mosquito vectors.

Flavivirus encephalitis
Article Abstract:
Flaviviral encephalitus is caused by a combination of climatic, entomologic, human behavioral, viral and host factors by a virus that is naturally transmitted among bird biting mosquitoes. The similarities and differences between the West Nile virus and other flaviviruses of the JE serogroup are reviewed.
