Acting alone
Article Abstract:
Microarray-based gene-expression profiling analysis on seven hormone-sensitive (HS) and HR prostate cancer xenograft pairs was used for understanding the mechanism of hormone-refractory (HR) prostrate tumor growth. All seven pairs differentially expressed androgen-receptor (AR) messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA), which indicated that the overexpression of AR could be responsible for converting HS tumors to HR tumors and a decrease in AR mRNA could reduce the growth of the tumor.

Cutting and pasting chromosomes
Article Abstract:
The presence of a 'minute chromosome' that replaced one of the four smallest autosomes in chronic myelogenous leukaemia (CML) cells called Philadelphia chromosome is reported. It shows that the human cell homologue of the transforming sequence of Abelson murine leukaemia is translocated in CML cells indicating the generation of human leukaemia.

Mina Bissell
Article Abstract:
Cell biologist Mina Bissell's radical ideas and fearless approach have helped shape ideas about the development of breast tumors. Her main aim is to develop a more realistic three-dimensional model of breast cancer that mimics its normal situation and could be used to study cancer pathogenesis and test anticancer drugs.
