Proton spectroscopy in asymptomatic HIV-infected adults: initial results in a prospective cohort study
Article Abstract:
Magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) may be able to detect HIV infection of the central nervous system (CNS) during its early stages. MRS is similar to MRI except that it detects metabolic changes whereas MRI reveals structure. Researchers used MRS to study metabolic changes in 19 HIV-infected patients and 10 healthy individuals. All the patients had normal MRI scans. The ratio between certain amino acids and a chemical called creatine appeared to best distinguish early HIV CNS infection. The average ratio in the HIV-infected patients was 1.8 whereas the average ratio in the healthy volunteers was 0.5.

Association between Cryptosporidium infection and animal exposure in HIV-infected individuals
Article Abstract:
Pet ownership may not increase the risk of Cryptosporidium infection in HIV patients. Researchers compared 48 HIV patients with cryptosporidiosis and 99 HIV patients without the diarrheal illness. No differences in overall pet ownership or the ownership of cats or birds was detected between the two groups. Dog ownership may be associated with as many as 17% of infections with cryptosporidiosis in this group, but the relationship is not clear. HIV patients may gain significant benefit from owning a pet, but should avoid direct contact with pet feces to prevent a number of infections.
