Africa Needs More Aid, New Partnerships to Fight Malaria
Article Abstract:
African health ministers asked for more aid from industrialized nations at a conference convened by the American Medical Team for Africa, a nonprofit group that provides medical supplies and training to African nations. They also seek a reduction in bureaucratic red tape and a larger role in decision making. They want the US to provide $10 billion during the next 5 years, with matching amounts provided by Japan and the European Union. Africa has 70%, of the world's estimated 35 million cases of HIV infection and AIDS and three-quarters of the malaria cases.

Conquering HIV and stigma in Kenya
Article Abstract:
The HIV epidemic in Kenya is assuming alarming proportions and aid agencies are finding it difficult to obtain funding but there are some agencies like the Academic Model for Prevention and Treatment of HIV/AIDS, AMPATH that is trying to do its best with limited resources. AMPATH has succeeded in setting up two HIV clinics with nearly four-thousand patients being treated but the foundation also rehabilitates patients by growing health food on its farm which ensures that patients support themselves during recovery.

Preventive antiretroviral use expands
Article Abstract:
The U.S. government has determined that sufficient evidence exists to sanction the use of antiretroviral drugs to prevent HIV infection following nonoccupational exposure to the virus. Experts caution that prophylactic antiretroviral drugs should be used sparingly, only when the risk of transmission is substantial.
