Age of no concern
Article Abstract:
Research by Age Concern will show that the elderly do not receive National Health Service treatment because they are considered by the medical profession to be too old. Clinical decisions are based on assumptions about the quality of life of an elderly person, and a younger person may be considered to be more deserving. Invitations for breast cancer screening stop when a woman reaches 65 years, although she is more likely to get breast cancer as she gets older and some women who have asked for screening have been refused. Age Concern is keen to challenge this age discrimination.

Computer assessment in continuing care
Article Abstract:
The Assessor is a computer program which allows nursing professionals to make effective dependency assessments of elderly patients within a nursing home situation. The program involves assessing client needs in 15 different categories, with scores ranging from zero, that is no loss of function, to five, a complete loss of function. The total score shows whether the client has a low, medium, high or maximum level of dependency. The user can set reassessment periods according to the client's needs, and the program provides an on-screen reminder that a reassessment is due.
