Air today, gone tomorrow: air sampling is a costly and time-consuming exercise and results can be misleading
Article Abstract:
A British Standards Institution paper calls for regular monitoring of microbiological air quality in operating theatres, but the results often vary and there are uncertainties about acceptable standards. The value of such tests are disputed and studies indicate that routine examination of air flow and the ventilation plant and appropriate cleaning and disinfecting mean that microbiological sampling is not required. Air sampling is expensive and time consuming and is not generally viewed as an effective method of infection control.
