Reducing the risk of breast cancer
Article Abstract:
It may never be possible to completely prevent breast cancer but many women can lower their risk. High-fat diets, obesity, alcohol use, and a sedentary lifestyle have all been linked to an increased risk of breast cancer. Several research trials are trying to determine if a low-fat diet that includes exercise will lower women's risk of breast cancer. Women at high risk of breast cancer can also take the drug tamoxifen, or have a prophylactic mastectomy. Women with the BRCA gene mutation have an especially high risk of breast cancer.

Reducing the use of mechanical ventilation
Article Abstract:
Intensive care units should develop ways to reduce the amount of mechanical ventilation in patients who can breathe independently. Nurses and respiratory specialists are well suited to improve the quality of intensive care. Preventing the effects of drug-induced hypoventilation and providing non-invasive ventilation via face masks should further minimize mechanical ventilation. According to a 1996 study, discontinued ventilation in those who could tolerate it decreased both costs and complications markedly.

"Westernizing" women's risks? Breast cancer in lower-income countries
