Alesse: leading the shift to 20 micrograms
Article Abstract:
The pharmaceutical industry has developed oral contraceptives that contain 20 micrograms or less of estradiol. This was done because higher doses of estrogen in oral contraceptives have been linked to an increased risk of abnormal blood clotting. One such contraceptive is Alesse, produced by Wyeth-Ayerst Laboratories.

Efficacy and safety of low, standard, and high dosages of an estradiol transdermal system (Esclim) compared with placebo on vasomotor symptoms in highly symptomatic menopausal patients
Article Abstract:
A low-dose estradiol patch called Esclim appears to be safe and effective in treating symptoms of menopause. The low-dose patch contains 0.025 milligrams of estradiol and does not have an alcohol-based gel. These gels can irritate the skin in some women.

The effects of a low-dose monophasic preparation of levonorgestrel and ethinyl estradiol on coagulation and other hemostatic factors
Article Abstract:
An oral contraceptive containing only 20 micrograms of estradiol appears to have no adverse effect on blood clotting. This dose is lower than traditional contraceptives because high estradiol doses have been linked to abnormal blood clotting.
