Are nurses ready to take on the BNF?
Article Abstract:
The history of nurse prescribing, which traces back to 1998 is described and an evaluation is done to find out whether the forthcoming extension of their prescribing powers is a positive move. A survey conducted on 24 nurse prescribers and 10 in-depth case studies showed that nurse prescribing is largely successful.

A stepping stone to full prescribing
Article Abstract:
Supplementary prescribing might be a useful stepping-stone, enabling nurses to prescribe more widely than the present extended formulary by working in partnership their General Practitioner. It is described as time-consuming yet many nurses are using this system to meet patient needs.

Implications of non-medical prescribing of controlled drugs

Mental health nurses working in the substance misuse field will be able to prescribe controlled drugs as part of their role. The implications of this and its potentially positive impact on the existing prescribing services are discussed.
