Workers' comp in turmoil

The compensation debt for workers is 1.64 million Australian dollars in 2000 in New South Wales, Australia. Employers and the government are considering private underwriting to cover the scheme and believe that this will also reduce injury in the workplace.

A safety and health report on the Australian minerals industry for 1997-98 has been produced by the Minerals Council of Australia. Whilst fatality rates are still too high, there has been a steady decrease in lost-time injuries.
