Balloon angioplasty versus implantation of nitinol stents in the superficial femoral artery
Article Abstract:
An investigation on whether primary implantation of a self-expanding nitinol (nickel-titanium) stent yielded anatomical and clinical benefits superior to those afforded by percutaneous transluminal angioplasty with optional secondary stenting is presented. The treatment of superficial-femoral-artery disease by primary implantation of a self-expanding nitinol stent yielded results that were superior to those with the currently recommended approach of balloon angioplasty with optional secondary stenting.

Coronary-artery stents
Article Abstract:
Two important randomized clinical trials compared the Palmaz-Schatz stent with balloon angioplasty, establishing the elective placement of coronary stents as a standard treatment. Once the role elective stent implantation was established, the next goal was to overcome the complications of subacute stent thrombosis and neointimal hyperplasis through pharmacologic and physical means.

Endarterectomy versus stenting in patients with symptomatic severe carotid stenosis
Article Abstract:
A multicenter, randomized, noninferiority trial is conducted to compare stenting with endarterectomy in patients with a symptomatic carotid stenosis of at least 60%. The results have shown that the rates of death and stroke at 1 and 6 months were lower with endarterectomy than with stenting in patients with symptomatic carotid stenosis of 60% or more.
